It can disrupt your everyday life, and many practitioners tell patients there is no effective treatment for tinnitus. Since 1989, our team of audiologists has offered innovative hearing solutions for our patients. We put your needs first to ensure you can hear clearly. Contact us today to schedule an appointment.

Symptoms of Tinnitus

The most common symptom of tinnitus is ringing in the ears. Patients often hear hissing, whistling, buzzing, roaring, or ringing. These symptoms may be intermittent or continuous. While there is no cure for these tinnitus symptoms, there are treatments to help patients find relief. We treat the patient’s reactions to sounds instead of the actual sound. Our team of audiologists is devoted to helping patients find relief from these debilitating symptoms.

Causes and Tinnitus Treatment

Causes of Tinnitus

Tinnitus is commonly associated with hearing loss. It is sometimes accompanied by hyperacusis, which is physical discomfort caused by loud noises, and misophonia, which is a decreased tolerance to specific sounds like chewing, clicking, or sniffing. The most common causes of tinnitus include:

  • Noise exposure
  • Hearing loss
  • Aging
  • Head injury
  • Many causes are unknown

Treatment for Tinnitus

At Hearing Associates, we utilize a two-part management program that helps successfully treat people with tinnitus. This method, known as Tinnitus Retraining Therapy, (TRT) involves the limbic system, auditory system, and autonomic nervous system.

Treatment plans are typically 9-18 months, starting with counseling to help patients better understand tinnitus. Sound therapy utilizes an enriched sound environment as part of treatment and can be implemented with ear-level devices and tabletop sound generators. We work with each patient to set sound enrichment within their environments.

Benefits of Tinnitus Treatment

Benefits of Tinnitus Treatment

We’ve helped thousands of patients find relief from constant loud noises in their ears. Tinnitus treatments help patients hear, sleep, and concentrate better. Besides tinnitus treatment, our audiology professionals apply principles of TRT to desensitize the auditory system of patients with decreased sound tolerance (DST), hyperacusis, and misophonia. Hyperacusis involves an adverse reaction to sounds due to specific characteristics of volume or intensity, while misophonia involves an adverse reaction to particular sounds like chewing, clicking, or sniffing. We perform a hearing assessment to properly treat any sound-related issues.
